A project curated by students from a Native American Art and Museum Histories Seminar and supported by the Andrew W . Mellon Foundation .
Between 1927 and 1929 , six Kiowa artists created many paintings of Kiowa culture at the University of Oklahoma . Spencer Asah , James Auchiah , Jack Hokeah , Stephen Mopope , Lois Smoky , and Monroe Tsa-toke make up what is now referred to as the Kiowa Six . This exhibit explores the ways in which they acted as strong agents of Kiowa cultural preservation during and after their residencies at OU .

Bialac Collection , 2010 all Cherokee , were Noel Grayson , traditional arts ; Jennie Wilson , pottery ; Vicki Coppedge , basketry ; Robin Stockton , visual arts ; Ernie Lee Poindexter , sculpture ; Carolyn Pallett , beadwork ; Candessa Tehee , textiles ; and Toneh Chuleewah , jewelry . Ray Commiato won the Emerging Artist Award , and Keli Gonzales won the Bill Rabbit Legacy Award .
ART MARKETS
The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts ( SWAIA ) held the VIRTUAL INDIAN MARKET , in lieu of its annual Santa Fe Indian Market . Glenda McKay ( Ingalik Athabascan ) won Best of Show with $ 10,000 in prize money . Classification winners were Farrell Pacheco ( Santo Domingo Pueblo ), jewelry ; Shirley Brauker , PhD ( Little River Odawa ), pottery ; Everton Tsosie ( Navajo ), 2D – Paintings / Drawings / Graphics / Photography ; Ronald Honyumptewa ( Hopi ), Pueblo wooden carvings ; Ira Lujan ( Taos Pueblo ), sculpture ; Glenda McKay , diverse arts ; Lola Cody ( Navajo ), textiles ; Bill Mendoza ( Oglala / Sicangu Lakota ), beadwork / quillwork ; TobyMae Patricio ( Acoma ), youth ; and Theresa Secord ( Penobscot ), basketry .
VIM featured four special awards . Shirley Brauker won the Solidarity in Our Current Times Award , Christal Ratt ( Algonquin ) won the Elaborate Face Mask Award , Beverly Bear King Moran ( Standing Rock Lakota ) won the Executive Director ’ s Award : Honoring Your Mother and Father , and Aydrian James Day ( Ho-Chunk / Lakota / Anishinaabe ) won the People ’ s Choice Award .
The RED EARTH FESTIVAL , held at the Citizen Potawatomi Nation ’ s Grand Casino and Hotel in Shawnee , Oklahoma , was one of the few in-person art markets held since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out . Glass artist Lauretta Newby- Coker ( Choctaw ) won the Grand Award , while Linda Kukuk ( Choctaw ) won the President ’ s Award , and Yonavea Hawkins ( Caddo / Delaware ) won the Kathleen Everett Upshaw Award . Division award winners were Nelda Schrupp ( Nakota ), cultural items ; Jon Tiger ( Muscogee ), drawings / graphics / photography ; Stuart Sampson ( Citizen Potawatomi ), diversified artwork ; Ray “ Duck ” Garcia ( San Felipe Pueblo ), contemporary jewelry ; Abraham Begay ( Navajo ), traditional jewelry ; Michael McCullough ( Choctaw ), painting , oil / acrylic ; Jon Tiger , painting , water-based ; and Monica Lovato ( San Felipe / Kewa Pueblo ), pottery / sculpture .

Art advocate , collector , and philanthropist Michael Audain , OC , OBC , donated 3 million Canadian dollars to the UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA ( UBC ) in Victoria to create the Audain Chair in Historical Indigenous Art . This new position researches artworks , particularly from
