MUSEUMS
The SMITHSONIAN AMERICAN
ART MUSEUM and the NATIONAL
MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN
INDIAN have jointly hired Anya Montiel,
PhD (Mestiza/Tohono O’odham), as
a curator of American and Native
American women’s art and craft. She
earned her doctoral and master’s degrees
in American studies from Yale University,
a master’s degree in museum studies from
John F. Kennedy University, and a bachelor’s
degree in Native American studies
and anthropology from the University
of California, Davis. Previously, Montiel
served as an assistant professor of art
history at the University of Arizona and
curator of collections at the Tohono
O'odham Nation Cultural Center and
Museum in Topawa, Arizona. For more

page 14 of this issue.
The GILCREASE MUSEUM of Tulsa,
Oklahoma, hired Chelsea Herr (Choctaw
Nation) as its new curator of Indigenous
art and culture. Herr, who grew up in
above The Museu Paraense Emílio
Goeldi in Belém, Pará, is the oldest
scientific institution in the Amazon
