American Thoracic Society (ATS) Created in 1905, ATS is the oldest respiratory society in the world. Its founding philosophy “that disease and suffering can be eliminated faster when discoveries and knowledge are shared” has been expanded to encompass all aspects of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine. With its widening mission, the Society’s membership has become increasingly diverse, and nearly one-third of the Society’s members are non-US based. The mission is to improve health worldwide by advancing research, clinical care and public health in respiratory disease, critical illness and sleep disorders.
