FIREWIRE • Five Year Anniversary
San Bernardino Regional Emergency Training Center (SBRETC) training programs are designed to expose students
to “real” life training exercises. Training is based on previous incidences, frequent and common occurrences.
Training is conducted through the conveyance of theory (classroom), controlled scenario based manipulative
exercises (hands-on) and often under “live” fire conditions with real life responses and mitigation expectations.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Driven partly by national statistics and trends, and
partly by the heart-wrenching stories of those among
us who have suffered, FIREWIRE has held two major
firefighter health threats in frequent focus: cancer
and mental health, especially post-traumatic stress.
As such, in this section we revisit those topics with
several articles, including a highlight of our CARE
counseling team, which comprises Local 935 mem-
bers volunteering to help members in need; a report
on the search to find our agency’s next generation
of SCBA; an article on exposure reporting, which is a
key protection after the incident occurs; and finally a
feature on cancer prevention.
Throughout the pages of this issue, you’ll also see
updates on some of those who have been hit hardest
by injury or illness; keeping them visible on the pages
of this publication is important to keeping them and
their stories relevant.
