FIREWIRE Magazine Winter 2019: Celebrating 5 Years | Page 16

MEMBERS Originally published in Summer 2017 Photos: Terri Nielsen & Jarrot Porst Culminating an endeavor that began well over a year ago, the four racing members of Team Fire Velo/ Norton Strong, along with their 14 crew members, rolled across the Race Across America finish line in Annapolis, Md., on the morning of Sun., June 25, completing the over-3,000-mile course seven days, 19 hours, 14 minutes. During the journey the team faced numerous challenges, from 115-degree heat to chills at over 11,000 feet elevation, to the exhaustion of traversing endlessly-rolling Midwestern and Appalachian hills. Riding to compete in the four-person RAAM team category, TeamFVNS also raised over $30,000; the balance of which, after covering race costs, will go to the Fight On! Cory Norton YouCaring fund for Cory and Jose Cruz. Many thanks to crew chief and fellow-Local 935 member Mike Caddell, who performed the role of herding cats on barely any sleep for a week. Thanks of course to the entire crew, including the guys from cycling club Fire Velo, without whose expertise and support the team’s effort would not have occurred. Finally, congratulations to the racers: Captain Tim Goforth and Firefighter/Paramedic Sean Jackson of Station 91, Engineer Ricky Arnold of Station 312 and Engineer Travis Grapes of Station 232, for their inspiring performance across the continent. 16 FIREWIRE • Five Year Anniversary Winter 2019 • FIREWIRE 17
