National Night Out gives firefighters, police and other community leaders a chance to interact with the folks we serve in ways we don’t often get to during the normal course of duty. It is a night of strengthening relationships and making new friends. This year, on Aug. 6, Local 935 members participated in events throughout County Fire’s jurisdiction, joining with residents in taking over the streets for all kinds of activities and good food. At San Manuel Stadium in San Bernardino, members representing the San Bernardino County Firefighter’s Association and County Fire laced up their cleats and took the field in a baseball game versus a team from San Bernardino Police Department. The game was back and forth, but for the second year in a row, the players sporting fire engine red defeated the boys in blue, this time by a score of 9-5. By Ryan Beckers A highlight of the evening was the first pitch ceremony honoring Nathaniel Stocks, a young boy from Phelan who in 2015 saved his grandmother’s life with his quick actions during a fire at their family home. Nathaniel’s class had only that week been visited by SBCoFD crews, who had shown the students techniques for surviving exactly such an event. This was just one example of many events and interactions which took place that evening— mirroring Local 935’s community involvement not just on special designated nights, but every day. Engaging with our community is an integral part of our jobs, and it is part of the all-risk, full-service mission of County Fire. 50 FIREWIRE • Summer 2018 Summer 2018 • FIREWIRE 51
