For 37 years, Firehouse magazine has annually compiled
statistics from fire departments across North America.
These statistics are then published to help fire departments compare personnel,
budgets and response data. Over several issues in the summer, career-department
statistics are published in the National Run Survey. In 2016 there were a total of 248
fire departments that took part, representing 45 states, the District of Columbia and
four Canadian provinces. This summer San Bernardino County Fire will be included
among those.

Undoubtedly, most of us are familiar with Firehouse and these
surveys. In fact, walk into most any station and you will find an issue
lying about, often open to the pages containing the run data. With
over 81,000 subscriptions, Firehouse has the highest circulation of
any fire-related journal.
So how will San Bernardino County Fire stack up against other
fire departments such as Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County,
Orange County and FDNY? Well, you do not have to wait until the
summer months because you will find a small preview right here!
You may or may not be surprised to find that when we compare
the 2017 statistics with the 2016 survey we come out as definite
top contenders for call volume, busiest engine, busiest station and
busiest non-transport unit.
According to these statistics, we may find ourselves about ninth in
the country for total calls, and our busiest engine company, ME224
in San Bernardino, could come in around fourth place! Station 311
was our busiest station and looks to be a top 25 contender. The most
surprising statistic (which may not surprise those who work on this
unit) is that MS311 may be, by far, the busiest non-transport EMS unit
in the nation with almost 7,000 calls! Last year, a unit out of Florida
was number one with just over 6,000 calls. Of course, this is all based
on a bit of speculation so we will have to wait and see how the final
numbers pan out this summer!
