“We always love partnering with Local 935 to bring joy to some de- serving kids,” says organization founder Kim Savage. “County fire- fighters are great with the children and the firehouse is a perfect place for these kids to look ahead and dream about being a firefighter.” By Jeff Allen Among the many charitable organizations Local 935 supports, our part- nership with Megan’s Wings is one about which we are particularly proud. Established in 2005 by the family of Megan Savage, a local girl who lost her battle with Leukemia in 2003, the group helps families going through pediatric cancer navigate their journey by providing support and guidance. A volunteer-based registered charity, Megan’s Wings assists families across Southern California via the Children’s Hospitals and cancer centers. Perhaps because our membership is unfortunately familiar with can- cer struggles, the mission of Megan’s Wings resonates with Local 935. As such, each year our partnership grows stronger through our support of fundraising events such as September’s annual 5K/1K run- walk event in Upland, or October’s “Trunk or Treat” Halloween event hosted at Station 305 in Hesperia. The latter went so we we got some praise from local officials. “What a wonderful event hosted by 935,” says Hesperia Mayor Larry Bird of the Trick or Trunk event.” The children were in awe of all the different firefighters and costumes and all the fun activities to do. It was a wonderful reprieve for them and their courageous fight against cancer. The volunteers were amazing and kept spirits high.” “Megan’s Wings was awesome,” says City Council Member Brigit Bennington. “The children had fun exploring the fire trucks, talking to firefighters and of course getting their candy bags filled. Best of all was checking out the helicopter!” To make a tax-deductible donation to Megan’s Wings, click the link below. mgnswngs.ejoinme.org/MyPages/DONATE/tabid/346734/Default.aspx 40 FIREWIRE • FALL 2019 FALL 2019 • FIREWIRE 41
