Due to the concern for potential industrial chemicals , foam units were called in from the Buffalo Airport , the Niagara Falls Air Force Base , the Rochester Airport , Buffalo Fire Department and some other New York state fire-owned units . “ We used limited amounts of foam but then water was really found to be the best extinguishing agent ,” Sprague said . “ We had a lot of foam there if we needed it but we really didn ’ t focus on using a lot .” Firefighters continued battling the blaze through the night , facing additional challenges as a lightning storm entered the area Tuesday evening . “[ The storm ] added a layer of complexity . Our biggest concern was the lightning . The rain wasn ’ t going to affect us very much but we had the aerial ladders 100 to 120 feet in the air and as soon as we found out that there was lightning in the area we pulled our manpower off those pieces of apparatus ,” Sprague said . “ They were still operational with water flowing so it didn ’ t really hamper our extinguishing efforts . But we did have the personnel removed for a short period until that storm passed and then we resumed full operations again .” The fire remains under investigation and the cause of the fire has not been identified . While no monetary estimation of damages has been released at this time , Sprague said that the bulk of the building suffered extensive fire damage and any remaining areas that may have been protected from flames still faced severe water and smoke damage . While the building may not be salvageable , the operation as a whole can be deemed a striking success as no injuries or illness were reported as a result of the incident . “ There was a small group of employees there that were accounted for when the first team arrived on location ,” Sprague said . “ And there were no injuries to any of our firefighter staff or civilian injuries or illness that were reported . That was our No . 1 goal and it was accomplished .” While the black billowing clouds of smoke , endless array of sirens and emergency vehicles and bright flames may have appeared as a scene reminiscent of Armageddon , for those involved it was also a show of teamwork , compassion and community support that illustrated just how strong the support system throughout the local community really is . “ I want to make sure that we keep emphasizing our gratitude toward our mutual aid companies that came from all over Western New York and local businesses and residents of the area that donated food , supplies , water , anything that we could have possibly needed for this 22-hour operation ,” Sprague said .
