Daniel Dulany, an Irish immigrant and prominent lawyer/land
developer of Annapolis dubbed Frederick City’s major east-
west road, Patrick Street in 1745. Soon after came plans
for the first federally funded road. Built between 1811 and
1837, Thomas Jefferson’s Historic National Road stretches
from Maryland to Illinois. Frederick’s own Patrick Street
shares part of its path with this historic road. The National
Pike or Route 40, as some know it, has seen much history
along its winding path with taverns, homes, and businesses
hosting many a wandering traveller, including some well-
known historic figures.
