gem , but since gaining independence in 2006 , the tourism industry has grown rapidly . It now accounts for roughly 20 % of GDP , strengthening the economy and stabilising politics in the region . Montenegro ’ s economic success has caught the eye of the European Union , and the nation is now an official candidate for EU member status .
