The Boxed Lady was inspired on the trip to China during vacations. There I met a friend of my dad that told me the story of her life in China. She had had a very tough life. Part of the Chinese culture is that when a coupled is married the woman must move in the husband’s house with his parents and the mother in law will be always in charge of the house. So, she was always looking for her approval. Finally, they bought a house for themselves and she no longer had to live up to anyone's expectations, but her own. I began to draft this friend’s story and after a few edits it became clearer. I did receive feedback that said to give more background to her story and I did. I added and deleted some parts in order to perfect the story. I am proud of the descriptions and images I built. “Her skirt reached all the way to her ankles with a traditional flower print and her white blouse covered her skin up to her neck bones. Her dark heavy hair was tied up in a perfect bun.” I never say that she is chinese and yet it is evident that she is. It could have been improved by describing more the situation she was in and the specific reasons that had lead her to her depression. Also, I feel that the ending could give a little more hints to what she will do to save her daughter. Overall, it is a good piece; not one of my best, but clearly not one of my worst.
