Pragmatics.
Context.
In our discussion of the last two
examples, we emphasized the
influence of context. There are
different kinds of context. One kind
is described as linguistic context,
also known as co-text. The co-text of
a word is the set of other words used
in the same phrase or sentence. The
surrounding co-text has a strong
effect on what we think the word
probably means.
Deixis.
Phenomenon of the language which
consists on referring to a piece of
reality by using a word whose
meaning can only be guessed when
both speaker and addressee are
sharing the same context.
Example:
▪ Would you mind leaving this room
now.
