Symphony in the City Performance Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
As part of the BSO’ s Symphony in the City series, the Orchestra will host a free concert celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 19, 2026 at the Meyerhoff, led by Music Director Jonathon Heyward.
The BSO has a history of presenting an Martin Luther King, Jr. Day concert. For many years through the early 2000s, the Orchestra’ s annual“ Let Freedom Ring” concert was the state’ s official tribute to the renowned civil rights activist.
Since its launch in 2019, the Symphony in the City series intentionally aligns concerts and venues with community celebrations, including the BSO’ s last Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute concert at the B & O Railroad Museum in January 2024.

MUSIC DIRECTOR JONATHON HEYWARD’ S CONTRACT EXTENDED THROUGH 2031
Last month, the BSO announced that Jonathon Heyward’ s contract has been extended for another three years, confirming his artistic leadership through the 2030-31 Season.
Since beginning his tenure in the 2023 – 24 Season, Heyward has brought innovative programming, fresh artistic energy, and powerful storytelling to the BSO stages, and across the state. His passion for accessibility and inclusion has built bridges to audiences and mirrors the BSO’ s mission to serve as a cultural resource for our whole community. Heyward’ s story and talents have taken the classical music world by storm.
This agreement is an inspiring example of Jonathon’ s commitment to the BSO’ s future, as well as a wonderful vote of confidence from both the Orchestra and the community in the creative direction of the BSO.
