TOP BSYO ENSEMBLE PERFORMS FOR MARYLAND ’ S MUSIC EDUCATORS
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ITS HISTORY , the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra ’ s top ensemble was selected to perform at the Maryland Music Educators Association ’ s ( MMEA ) State Conference . 132 students from the Youth Orchestra ( YO ), led by Director Chris Cicconi , took center stage at the Baltimore Convention Center on March 8 , performing Mahler ’ s First Symphony for a prestigious crowd of educators , students , and parents from across Maryland .
“ I can ’ t think of a better way to demonstrate the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra ’ s , as well as the BSYO ’ s , steadfast dedication to the betterment of education for Maryland ’ s music students than by allowing the BSYO to perform such a monumental work ,” Cicconi said .
The performance was both a testament to the BSO and MMEA ’ s strategic partnership , and an inspiring celebration of Music in Our Schools Month . All year long , but especially throughout the month of March , the BSO recognizes the efforts of talented student musicians , and music educators who tirelessly dedicate their careers to improving lives through music .
The YO ’ s March 8 concert was a career highlight for Cicconi , who received the MMEA Outstanding Educator Award at last year ’ s conference .
“ From the day I moved to the state of Maryland , I have longed to be a part of such a wonderful organization with a sterling reputation like the BSYO ,”
Cicconi said . “ I am honored to have the opportunity to work with these fantastic students and share my love of music and passion for teaching with them .”
Several BSYO students aspire to perform professionally one day , making the ensemble and its many opportunities crucial to their futures . Beyond playing some of the most well-known pieces in the orchestral canon , these students work directly with BSO musicians during side-by-side rehearsals , often led by Music Director Jonathon Heyward . Heyward had the honor of introducing the YO ahead of their March 8 performance . “ To receive tutelage from the BSO ’ s world-class musicians is truly invaluable ,” Cicconi said . “ I firmly believe that the BSYO helps our students grow and flourish musically , as well as personally . They are welcomed into a warm and accepting environment , all while reaching new heights as musicians .”
Beyond the personal growth and performance opportunities the BSYO provides , Cicconi hopes his students also learn to see music as a way to connect with others .
“ Above all things , the part of my professional career that is most important to me is inspiring young musicians to appreciate how music can bring us all together for a common goal and purpose .”
