What is Wide Angle Youth Media ?
Through media arts education , Wide Angle Youth Media cultivates and amplifies the voices of Baltimore youth to engage audiences across generational , cultural , and social divides . Our programs inspire creativity and instill confidence in young people , empowering them with skills to navigate school , career , and life .
Working at Wide Angle Youth Media has brought me more fulfillment than I would have ever expected from a summer internship . I had the intention of putting myself in a brand-new space when I first applied to CIIP , and I have found my niche at Wide Angle . When I got news of my placement at Wide Angle from Bentley , I was apprehensive about entering the nonprofit sector , especially at an organization that I was not familiar with . In retrospect , my reasons for being reluctant to start at Wide Angle were superficial : my passions did not seem to align with an organization that provides media education to students , and besides , I am a terrible photographer . My expectations and perceptions of nonprofit work and youth programming organizations were thrown out the window on my first day of work . After these past 8 weeks , I truly feel like I have found my place within the organization . My team and their mission-driven work motivate me to be ( and continue to be ) present , to show up for others ( not just in a work environment but in every capacity ), and get work done . Conversations with my supervisor Keiona and the team have been an integral part of my CIIP experience . I continue to be inspired by the stories around me , and I will carry them forward with every experience .
I have also been exposed to the importance of mission-driven work and connections with the community in nonprofit management . After transitioning from preparing student materials for the summer multimedia class , I was tasked with maintaining contacts at community organizations , a labor-intensive but crucial component in any nonprofit space .
Being surrounded by such grounded and passionate people at Wide Angle has given me a sense of commitment to the Baltimore community and a clearer picture of what I want to work towards after Hopkins . What I ’ ve learned through CIIP will allow me to continue to feel more prepared to take on my personal and professional goals , and I am incredibly grateful to have gotten this opportunity to do so . Huge thank you to the CSC and WAYM team !
