FUNERARY
Funerary resources include cemeteries , crypts , and other sites and structures associated with human burials . The current survey effort documented six cemeteries . These sites are mediumsized in scale , with densely spaced graves and concrete , stone , or metal headstones . The smallest of these resources is the Colonel Johnson Plantation and Cemetery Park , which is located in the 500 block of W . Arkansas Street . Most are within a rectangular plot of land that is enclosed with a metal or wood fence . An entry gate typically facing onto the nearby roadway provides access to the graves .
GOVERNMENT
This category includes buildings that house governmental offices and / or services . The survey documented one property in the category , the former Arlington Post Office that is located at 200 W . Main Street . The resource , erected in 1939 , is one-story in height and utilizes load-bearing masonry construction . Exterior walls are clad with a buff-colored brick , and windows are aluminum-frame units . The resource , which originally functioned as a post office , currently functions as a bank . The interior of the building boasts a Works Progress Administration-funded mural by artist Otis Dozier entitled “ Gathering Pecans .”
RELIGION
Resources grouped within this property type category are used for religious purposes . Most of the buildings are churches and associated resources such as chapels . They vary in size , scale , materials , and architectural styling , depending on the date of construction , the type and affluence of the associated group , and location . This category also includes buildings such as educational facilities , religious , and / or parochial schools , as well as other resources directly or indirectly associated with and / or used for religious purposes .
TRANSPORTATION
Transportation resources include a wide variety of structures with varying roles in the movement of people and goods . These systems embrace rail and vehicular traffic and include structures such as bridges and culverts . These elements either help to overcome natural and / or man-made obstacles that impede traffic or are designed to improve the flow of traffic . Resources in this category that were identified by the current survey effort include the hitching post located at the 400 block of N . Mesquite Street , the railroad bridge at the 100 block of N . West Street , and the Missouri Pacific railroad track ’ s loading dock at the 100 block of N . Center Street .
HEALTHCARE
Healthcare facilities include those buildings that house services related to the prevention , treatment , and management of illness and the preservation of mental and physical well-being . Specifically , building types that fall within this category include hospitals , clinics , sanitariums , and resort facilities . Within Arlington , there exist a number of non-historic resources that fall in this category . The city also contains two historic healthcare facilities that were documented by the current survey effort — the Texas Masonic Retirement Center at 1501 W . Division Street and the Eastern Star Home at 1201 E . Division Street . The older of these resources , the Texas Masonic Retirement Center , was erected in 1914 . The building is three stories in height and displays Mission Revival stylistic detailing . The resource appears to have undergone a number of alterations , including the addition of rear- and front-facade wings , the enclosure of original porches , and the replacement of original window units .
