ccording to Johnny Carson “When a man is well
dressed, you are unaware of his clothes” while the
Ralph E. Ellsworth stated that “When a library is
well housed, you are unaware of its house”. Therefore, from
this statement we need to change the perception of the people
about the importance of the library. Can you imagine if a university builds a library without visitors? Surely these efforts are
fruitless and wasteful. Unfortunately, in the era of modernization now, there is a lot of lack in management of the library
that cause the people scoff at the existence of the library.
In addition, before we fix the entire problems, we
need to identify all the issues that always occur in an academic
library. Besides that, the purposes to identify the issues are
easy for us to draft a plan and strategy in order to improve the
library without left any important elements. Not only that, this
strategy also supported by Deanna Marcum at the ACRL National Conference (Marcum, 2001). Hence, the next paragraph
will elaborate in more details about the most often expressed
issues.
The top issues that always occur in the academic library are about the collections. Based on Godfrey Thompson
in the book that title Planning and Design of Library Building,
the main function of the library is to manage and store the
bibliographical and audio-visual materials, so the researchers,
students and faculty can use these materials and get it at the
fastest time. Most of the academic library facing a problem
in serving incomplete collections which the collection is not
arranged properly and difficult for the user to search and the
collection that have been provided mostly not related to the
user field.
Furthermore, 5000 titles of periodicals are suitable
to estimate and according to Standing Conference of National and University Library suggested that 4000 volumes out
of 3000 students for the established university (Thompson,
1977). Besides that, the academic library that provides a service for the industrial research will have a lot of report and
pamphlet. Not all the academic libraries are able to manage
their collection based on the predetermined standard. Some
