American author Dennis Lehane once averred:
Literature and film, movies and books, compare
like apples and giraffes. Books and films do
compare. They interbreed.
Over the years, Hollywood has made thousands
of movies adapted from historical or literary
sources. This has given birth to the recent
Internet slang, litflicks- literature adapted into
flicks, the flickering medium of the motion
pictures. With the Kenyan film industry on its
verge for takeoff, is movie adaptation from novels
the last gear to ensure the machine revs up?
The adaptation of John Kiriamiti’s My Life in
Crime novel to a movie has been welcomed by
Kenyans. Perhaps, it is the best news for the new
year. Every year brings the usual spate of movies
and TV shows adapted from books, offering a
variety of thrills. Clearly, the Kenyan industry has
not been left, as it has joined the foray.
