Scottish Wider Access Programmes , ( SWAP ) courses are specifically designed for those who have left formal education and , after a period away , want to return and progress to Higher Education . Successful completion can lead you to a place on an HNC , HND , or degree course at college or university in the SWAP – East network .

Entry is by informal discussion where you will be asked to demonstrate that you have the relevant life skills to successfully complete the SWAP course
Evidence of life skills may include level of maturity and experience of skills related to the potential choice of degree subject , including paid employment or volunteering and awareness of subject choice
Please note that school leavers cannot apply for SWAP courses .

Scottish Wider Access Programmes , also known as SWAP courses , are for adults who have few or no formal qualifications and who have been out of full-time education for at least three years ( five years if you have Highers or an HN ). This course gives you an introduction to health and social care professions and the career paths available in these areas . It allows you to begin your studies at level 6 on a generic programme studying subjects such as care and psychology .

This course is aimed at enabling you to develop the key skills of communicating and understanding . Recognition of the personal , academic , and vocational value of English study in the curriculum is widespread , and this course will enable you to develop your understanding of English Language and Literature .

National 5 : English at Grade C or above
NC : Communication Level 5
Higher : English at Grade D or above
A Higher in a subject that requires high levels of reading and essay writing such as History , Modern studies , or Psychology
