30 years ... from China to Chile
coached Otmar Hittzfield.
¿How this can help a player before a FIFA
U-17 World Cup?
“In this level you are found in a empty space:
you still are a young player, but you are also
a few steps away of professional level. That
is a challenge that makes you think that if
you work hard you could play with the first
team in the next season.
And of course, a FIFA U-17 World Cup is a
special stage where you can compete with
the best in all the world of your age, where
coaches, players, media and football experts
are watching everything you do. So it is like
a motivation to be able to reach the superior
level”.
When you were chosen as the “Adidas
Golden Ball”, in an interview with FIFA, you
said you were surprised having achieved that
trophy. Why did y ou feel that way?
“ Of course I was surprised, because you play
football to achieve things with your team
and not only as a player. I knew I had a good
tournament, but I felt overwhelmed when
I received the prize. I was totally happy for
getting a medal in Korea; the personal trophy was just the product of what that team
did”.
A tournament to consolidate
What came after that tournament for the
current player of the Real Madrid was a rapid consolidation. On September 26 of 2007,
only 18 days after achieving the third place
in FIFA U-17 World Cup, after defeating
Ghana, he had his debut in the Bundesliga
in the victory for 5-0 of the Bavarians over
the Energie Cottbus, and as it could not be
otherwise, he contributed with two assistances for the historic Miroslav Klose.
After a 2008-2009, with less participation,
he left on loan to the Bayern Leverkusen,
where he accomplished the long yearned
starting line up, playing 33 matches. An
from there, glory: He debut in the adult
National Team, achieves local and European titles with the Bayern Munich and the
achievement of last year´s World Cup in Brazil. Without a doubt, a road that seems to be
built in that unforgettable 2007, and so says
the player himself.
Do you think that the FIFA U-17 World Cup
South Korea 2007 was the event that allowed you to have total confidence that
you could become a successful professional
footballer?
“This question is not for me, because I have
always been confident (smiles). I think it was
a sign for the coaches and for the public that
I am a player that is worth to have. I knew
in that moment that I had to work hard, to
convince the coaches to want to work with
me and take me to a superior level. The FIFA
U-17 World Cup South Korea 2007 was one
of the most important events in my development as a football player”.
