J
uly 31st, 1985, will be marked down in
history as the day the FIFA U-17 World
Cup was born. In China, a country so far
unused to receive large sporting events, 16
national teams came out looking to achieve
the unprecedented title, which was finally
achieved by Nigeria, setting a precedent
for what would come later, in relation to
a continent that has become the leading
power of the contest.
Since then, it’s been another fourteen
tournaments, which have become cradle
to great players and talents for world football. Arisen due to the success of the FIFA
U-20 World Cup, introduced eight years
before, FIFA considers this World Cup, as
the third most important in its calendar.
Over 30 years, the FIFA U-17 World Cup,
has been developed, unalterably every
two years, and has walked through all
continents. America five times, Asia (4) Europe (3) Africa (2) and Oceania (1), are the
regions that have hosted the event since
its inception.
Africa, the great power
There have been eight different champions in the history of the FIFA U-17
World Cup, Nigeria, Ghana, Soviet Union,
France, Switzerland, Brazil, Mexico and
Saudi Arabia, existing prevalence of African countries, that collectively total six
crowns, beating America (5) Europe (3)
and Asia (1).
Individually, the country that has won
more cups, is Nigeria that in the last edi-
tion of the tournament, took off from Brazil, reaching its fourth cup and leaving the
“Scratch” with one less. Mexico and Ghana, with two each, are next on the list. Of
these, only Ghanaians may not compete in
Chile to extend their record.
A relevant fact is that Nigeria is the squad
that has played more finals, since builds up
seven. All their crowns have been curiously
on the Asian continent.
In terms of participations in the FIFA U-17
World Cup, the countries that have the
record of presence are Brazil and the United States, with fourteen each. Followed
further behind, by Argentina (12), Mexico
and Australia (11) and Nigeria (10).
In total, 78 nations around the world, have
been represented in the championship.
