C
hile is recognized worldwide as a narrow and long strip of land. Located
at the southwest of South America, it is
flanked by two mountain ranges: the Andes and the Coast range that overlook the
magnificent Pacific Ocean that bathes a
big part of its territory.
It has an area of 4,270 kilometres. One of
the distinctive features of its geography is
its average width of just over 177 kilometres. These aspects make that the country
can be divided into three parts: Continental, Insular Chile, and Antarctic Territory.
Continental Chile has a high longitudinal
development, spreading out for 39 degrees of latitude from the tripartite point
with Peru and Bolivia to the Diego Ramirez
Islands.
The Antarctic territory is located in the
southern high latitudes, from about 61 °
to the geographic South Pole. As for the
insular aspect, the most prominent are the
Easter Island, Juan Fernandez Archipelago, Great Island of Chiloe and the Great
Island of Tierra del Fuego.
Geologically, it is located on the Nazca
plate, which gives it the characteristic
of being one of the countries with
most seismic activity in the world,
besides of having a large volcanic activity,
with over two thousand formations, 500
of them susceptible to become active.
Multi-ethnic Nation
Chile has over 17 million inhabitants,
whose vast majority live in the central
area. The 52.7% of the population is creole, while 39.3% is mestizo and 8% are
indigenous. A study by the Universidad
de Chile identifies the 30% as Caucasian,
65% as mestizo, predominantly white,
and 5% as indigenous.
This is a society that progresses and that
has been b uilt from the coexistence of the
culture of native peoples and immigrants.
Over the years, this has been forming a
multi-ethnic identity that has been diversified even more with the massive arrival of
foreigners from various parts of the world,
especially from neighbouring countries,
who had stay taking advantage of the
benefits that the nation offers in work en-
