Step 5
Shim Plumb, Level and Square
5.1
Once the cabinets are completely stitched together for each
wall run and any corner fi llers are secured, begin shimming the fronts of
the Base Cabinets so that each wall run of cabinets is plumb, level and
square to itself and any adjacent cabinets.
Use solid wood, such as 2” x 4” fi r for shim stock. Do not use particle-
board, MDF or plywood for this purpose. Cut the shims with the miter
saw set at 4 to 5 degrees and taper the cuts across a 2” x 4” from about
1/2” to 0.

5.2
If the Preleveling has been done
correctly, the Base Cabinet runs will be
level from side-to-side at the wall.
Use a 2” level and tapered shims to level
the cabinets from front to back.
5.3
Use a 6’ level to
measure the overall level
of the Base Cabinets.
Confi rm that the Base
Cabinets are level from
front to back, side to side
and across corners and
openings.
Also confi rm that the faces
of the cabinets are plumb.
Make any minor adjust-
ments necessary to the
shim placements.
The Base Cabinet top sur-
face level tolerance must
be within 1/8 of an inch or
less over 6’.
