In the case of a tall cabinet, placing the cabinet
will cover the stud locations behind the cabinet. Marks
made at the stud locations at the Index Lines will not be
visible.
To remedy this, once the stud center is determined,
measure from the stud center to the plumb line drawn
on the wall that describes the starting edge of the tall
cabinet.

Write the dimension to the stud center on the side of the
plumb line that will still be visible once the tall cabinet
is moved and shimmed into place. The dimensions to
the studs behind the tall cabinet will be visible during its
installation.
Step 7
Examining Walls to Identify Bowed, Bellied or
Out of Square Conditions
7.1
Examine the walls for conditions that may require attention during the installation. Use a straightedge to high-
light any conditions. The following graphic demonstrates an exaggerated schematic of a few possible conditions.

Identify any areas that are greatly out of plumb, walls that are bowed in or humped out. Check any pony walls
for level as well. Mark the wall with any conditions you fi nd.
It’s possible that the cabinets will not be greatly affected by all of these conditions. However, some of these conditions
can alter the installation and may make alignment diffi cult.
It is helpful to understand the wall conditions before you begin securing cabinets to the wall. Once installation begins,
wall conditions that can hamper correct alignment won’t show themselves until they cause a problem.
Knowing where shimming or adjustment will be needed before placing cabinets on the wall will minimize rework.
