Hyalinobatrachium carlesvilai
Scientific synonyms/Sinónimos científicos: Common names/Nombres comunes: White-hearted glass frog**/Rana de cristal de corazón blanco**
Description: This small glass frog has a light green dorsum
with lime/yellow spots and minute black dots covering the
dorsal surface of the limbs. The toes and the fingers are
yellowish. The venter is completely transparent and most of
the internal organs are covered with a white pigment. The
webbing between the toes is two thirds full. The outer fingers
are also webbed. The iris is golden bronze with fine black
reticulations and small black flecks. The pupil is horizontal
and is irregularly shaped.
Similar species: The hearts of Hyalinobatrachium bergeri
and H. pellucidum are not covered with a white pigment.
Furthermore, the iris of H. bergeri has a dark ring around the
pupil. Aditionally H. pellucidum has a rounded snout whereas
the snout of H. carlesvilai is truncate. Other glass frogs in the
area do not have entirely see-through venters.
Habitat and ecology: This arboreal, nocturnal frog inhabits
pre-montane and montane forest. It can be found in streams
and rivers between 300 and 1200 m asl. Males call from the
underside of leaves. Females deposit around 30 eggs. Both
sexes attend to the clutch until a late stage of development.
At the MLC: Four adult individuals have been recorded.
Two of them in a fast-moving rocky stream and another in
completely cleared and now regenerating forest. A female
with eggs was found in July. It has been frequently heard
calling in a couple of the main streams of the reserve.
Centrolenidae
IUCN Status: Not assessed.
