Description: This tiny frog has a dark brown dorsum with
ventro-lateral and dorso-lateral cream stripes encompassing
a broad black lateral band. The hind limbs are dark brown
with transverse bands and toe III in males is swollen. The
venter is white and the throat in breeding males is gray. The
iris is bronze with black flecks.
Similar species: Allobates conspicuus is quite similar but it
has a uniform orangey brown dorsum with less conspicuous
or absent dorso-lateral stripes and the toe III in males is not
swollen. A. conspicuus and A. alessandroi lack the middorsal
stripe.
Habitat and ecology: This diurnal, fast-moving frog inhabits
the leaf litter of tropical forests, most commonly in terra
firme. It is an active forager with a diverse diet but the
main prey being ants, termites and springtails. They breed
during the rainy season and males determine their territories
by calls. Females lay two clutches and the males carry the
tadpoles to temporary ponds. It is likely that this species
represents a complex of species.
At the MLC: It is mainly found in completely cleared and now
regenerating forest areas where temporal ponds and puddles
of water are abundant.

Descripción: Esta diminuta rana tiene un dorso marrón
oscuro con bandas dorsolaterales y ventrolaterales crema
que abarcan una ancha banda lateral negra. Las patas
traseras son marrón oscuras con bandas transversales y el
dedo trasero III de los machos está hinchado. El vientre es
blanco y la garganta en los machos en estado reproductivo es
gris. El iris en bronce con motas negras.
Especies similares: Allobates conspicuus es bastante similar
pero tiene un dorso marrón anaranjado uniforme con bandas
dorsolaterales menos obvias o no presentes y el dedo trasero
III de los machos no está hinchado. A. conspicuus y A.
alessandroi no presentan banda mediodorsal.
Hábitat y ecología: Esta rana diurna y rápida habita en la
hojarasca de bosques tropicales, más frecuentemente en
terra firme. Es un depredador activo con una dieta diversa
pero sus principales presas son hormigas, termitas y
colémbolos. Se reproducen durante la estación húmeda y los
machos delimitan sus territorios con sus cantos. Las hembras
ponen dos puestas y los machos cargan a los renacuajos a
charcas
