Allobates femoralis Allobates femoralis Scientific synonyms/Sinónimos científicos: Epipedobates femoralis Common names/Nombres comunes: Brilliant-thighed poison frog / Rana saltona de muslos brillantes Description: The granular dorsum and sides are black with white dorsolateral stripes that run right from the snout down to the vent. There is another white stripe that runs from the snout to the groin separating the flanks from the venter. The limbs are tan to light brown and the throat and chest are black. The belly and ventral surfaces of the limbs are white with black mottling and the eye has a bronzy iris with black flecks. Habitat and ecology: This small diurnal frog inhabits terra firme forest and forest gaps. It is not toxic but it mimics other frogs which are, such as Ameerega hahneli. It is an active forager in the leaf litter where it feeds on arthropods, mainly mites. It breeds on the rainy season and males defend their territories vigorously. The clutches contain between 20 to 30 eggs and the males stays with his eggs until they hatch and he then carries the tadpoles on his back to a nearby stream.
