Adenomera andreae
Leptodactylidae
Adenomera andreae
Description: This small species has two distinct morphs
that could represent two different sympatric species. The
first and more common morph has a grayish brown dorsal
ground colour with symmetrical dark brown dorso-lateral
stripes, whilst the second usually has a darker ground colour
with cream/yellow dorso-lateral stripes. Both morphs have
a triangular shaped dark mark between the eyes, a smooth
white venter and usually on the dorsal surface a light stripe
that runs from the midbody to the vent. The snout is narrowly
rounded in shape.
Similar species: Adenomera hylaedactyla is slightly larger,
with yellow coloration in the groin and ventral region and has
a pointed snout. A. simonstuartii is bigger, darker and has a
dark stripe under the arm. Leptodactylus species are bigger
and have different patterns of colorations.
bandas dorsolaterales crema/amarillas. Ambas variantes
Habitat and ecology: This terrestrial frog can be found active
at both day and at night among the forest leaf litter. The males
build small burrows and foam nests where females deposit
up to 15 eggs. The tadpoles will develop entirely inside the
nest. Apparently it mainly breeds during the rainy season but
we have observed males calling all year round and females
containing eggs during the dry season (July to September). It
is a generalist, insectivorous forager. Under this name there
are probably more than one species masked.
At the MLC: One of the most common frogs in the reserve. It
is found in abundance in all kinds of forests but more common
in completely cleared and now regenerating forest. It has been
found to exist up to 1000 meters altitude (both morphs) but in
much lower relative abundance than in lower altitude areas.
IUCN Status: Least Concern. Stable. (Ver. 3.1)
