Hypsiboas cinerascens
Hypsiboas cinerascens
Scientific synonyms/Sinónimos científicos: Hyla granosa, Hyla cinerascens
Common names/Nombres comunes: Demerara falls treefrog/Rana granosa
Description: This is a medium sized tree frog. The granular
dorsum is bright green with a mildly conspicuous yellow
spotting. The groin and the back of the thighs are bluish
green. The venter is bluish green in the throat and chest
area, and is light green posteriorly. The internal organs are
partially visible and are covered by a white tissue layer. The
iris is orange with a bluish black ring in the outer edge.
Similar species: The only other green Hypsiboas species in the
area is H. punctatus, which has red dorsolateral bands. Glass
frogs are smaller, have different iris colorations and have
more transparency in the venter, among other differences.
Sphaenorhynchus dorisae has a different snout shape, lacks
any reddish coloration, has a smooth skin and does not have
a dark ring around the eye.
Habitat and ecology: This nocturnal and arboreal frog is
strongly associated with streams and ponds in lowland
tropical forests. It probably favors seasonally flooded forests.
It breeds in temporal and permanent ponds of water all year
round, but more intensely during the wet season. They can
lay up to 800 eggs.
At the MLC: Not recorded.
IUCN Status: Least Concern. Stable. (Ver. 3.1)
