Description: This is a robust caecilian, short and stocky. The
body is bluish to almost black, with a wide head. The rings
around the body are outlined in bluish white. The eye is in
a socket and is visible under the skin. The count of primary
annuli (body rings) is between 78 and 98.
Similar species: No other caecilian in the area has a bluish
colour with white rings around the body. Other caecilians are
also slender. Siphonops paulensis is found in open habitats.
Habitat and ecology: It has a wide distribution range that
includes tropical rainforests, but also drier ecosystems such
as cerrados and caatingas. It is an oviparous species and
is thought that it is a direct development species, with no
tadpole phase. Clutches are around 6 eggs. Females guard
the clutch and remain with the young after birth. The young
feed on secretions from the skin of the female.

Descripción: Esta es una cecilia robusta y corta de cabeza
ancha. El cuerpo es azulado, a veces casi negro. Los anillos
alrededor del cuerpo están remarcados por una coloración
blanca azulada. El ojo está en una cuenca bajo la piel, aunque
es visible a través de esta. La cuenta de anillos corporales
primarios está entre los 78 y 98.
Especies similares: Ninguna otra cecilia en el area tiene una
coloración azulada con anillos blancos alrededor del cuerpo.
Otras cecilias son además más esbeltas. Siphonops paulensis
se encuentra en hábitats abiertos.
Hábitat y ecología: Tiene un amplia área de distribución
que incluye selvas tropicales, pero también ecosistemas
más áridos, como por ejemplo cerrados y caatingas. Es una
especie ovípara y se cree que tiene desarrollo directo, sin
fase de renacuajo. Las puestas son de alrededor 6 huevos.
Las hembras protegen los huevos y permanecen junto a los
neonatos trás el nacimiento. Los jovenes se alimentan de
secreciones de la piel de la hembra.
