Leptodactylus rhodonotus
Leptodactylus rhodonotus
Scientific synonyms/Sinónimos científicos: Common names/Nombres comunes: Peru white-lipped frog/Rana terrestre de Günther
Description: The dorsum of this large frog is tan to grey with
dark markings. Its dark dorsolateral folds run almost to the
groin area. The flanks are usually darker with black flecks.
The face has black postorbital and canthal stripes and dark
blotches on the lip. The posterior surfaces of the thighs are
black with light mottling. The limbs show dark transverse
bands. The venter is white to grey with lighter mottling. The
iris is reddish with fine black reticulations.
Similar species: It can be distinguished from other large
Leptodactylus in the area by the lack of a white labial stripe
(present in L. rhodomystax, L. didymus and L. bolivianus)
and lack of transverse bands on the dorsum (present in L.
knudseni and L. pentadactylus).
Habitat and ecology: This terrestrial frog lives close to forest
streams in lowland and montane forests from 200 to 2050 m
asl. It can be present in disturbed habitats. During the rainy
season it deposits its eggs in a foam nest close to water. It
lives in burrows, quite likely abandoned rodent burrows. It
feeds on a wide array of invertebrates, gastropods, cicads,
earthworms and crabs.
At the MLC: Most commonly found around the MLC research
station facilities, but it is also found close to streams
throughout the reserve, especially in the most disturbed
habitats.
Leptodactylidae
IUCN Status: Least Concern. Unknown. (Ver. 3.1)
Desconocida. (Ver.
