Pristimantis skydmainos Craugastoridae
Description : This small and chunky frog has a dark brown dorsum to light brown dorsum . It shows a series of distinctive black spots or stripes , although some of these might be absent . These include one or two spots in the middle of the dorsum , a spot or a stripe on the forearm , a spot on the knee and an interorbital bar . The tip of the snout can have a tan blotch . The vent area is black in some individuals . There is a dark stripe running from the snout and over the eye to the tympanum . It has low dorsolateral folds and a low interocular fold . There are transverse bands on the limbs . The back of the thighs are brown with minute pale spots . The venter is white with faint brown flecks on the throat . The centre of the belly is smooth and the outer parts are areolated . The iris is golden with black reticulations and a red horizontal mid strike .
Similar species : Pristimantis buccinator is similar , but has red in the groin and thighs , different iris and more conspicuous dorsolateral folds . P . toftae has a yellow spot on the groin . P . peruvianus , P . danae and P . reichlei have yellow / orange flecks on the back of the thighs . P . reichlei and P . danae also lack dorsolateral folds .
Habitat and ecology : This nocturnal species inhabits tropical lowland and lower montane forest up to 1100 m asl ; where it is usually found on low vegetation . During the day individuals shelter in the leaf litter . Females lay between 11 and 25 eggs .
At the MLC : An uncommon species found in in the primary forests of the slopes of the Piñi Piñi range between 900 and 1100 m asl .

Descripción : Esta rana pequeña y regordeta tiene un dorso de color marrón oscuro a claro . Muestra una serie de puntos o bandas negras características , aunque algunas pueden no estar presentes . Estas incluyen uno o dos puntos en el medio del dorso , un punto o banda en el antebrazo , un punto en la rodilla y una banda inteorbital . La punta del hocico puede tener una mancha clara . El área de la cloaca es negra en algunos individuos . Tiene una franja oscura que va desde la nariz hasta el tímpano pasando por el ojo . Tiene pliegues dorsolaterales poco marcados y un pliegue interocular bajo . Presenta bandas transversales en las patas . La parte posterior de los muslos es de color marrón con diminutos puntos pálidos . El vientre es de color blanco con manchas marrones débiles en la garganta . La parte central del vientre es lisa , mientras que las partes externas son de textura areolada . El iris es de color dorado con reticulado negro y una banda horizontal roja atravesándolo .
Especies similares : Pristimantis buccinator es parecida , pero tiene coloración roja en la ingle y los muslos , un iris diferente y pliegues dorsolaterales más marcados . P . toftae tiene una mancha amarilla en la ingle . P . peruvianus , P . danae y P . reichlei tienen motas de color amarillo / naranja en la parte posterior de los muslos y P . reichlei y P . danae carecen de pliegues dorsolaterales .
Hábitat y ecología : Esta especie nocturna habita selvas en las tierras bajas y bosque montano bajo hasta los 1100 msnm ; donde se encuentra normalmente en vegetación baja . Durante el día se refugian en la hojarasca . Las hembras ponen entre 11 y 25 huevos .
En el MLC : Es una especie poco común que se encuentra en los bosques primarios de las laderas de la cordillera del Piñi Piñi , entre los 900 y los 1100 msnm .
Estado de la UICN : Preocupación menor . Estable . ( Ver . 3.1 )
