Sports 8 Senior swimmers say goodbye TLC: Talk. Listen. Communicate. January 2006 Fraser’s finest reflect on their last season in the pool. By Nicole Hinchman ‘06 Editor-in-Chief With new coach Laura Sangret leading the way, seniors Steve Rutherford and James Cox are swimming strong this season on the boy’s varsity swim team. With the Senior Steve Rutherford current season at 2-5, Rutherford and Cox are crucial assets to the team. As this is Rutherford’s fourth year swimming for FHS, he ex cels in the 100 and 200 freestyle. Rutherford finished the 100 freestyle in 50.83 seconds against Marysville. “When I swim the 100 freestyle, I just try to beat whoever is next to me,” said Rutherford. He is expected to be seeded third at the Macomb County meet on February 4, 2006. As the duel meets wrap up, Rutherford hopes to qualify for the MHSAA state championships. “To make states again would be a huge accomplishment,” said Rutherford. “When I qualified my sophomore year we were division two. Last year we moved up to division one, which makes the state cuts a lot faster.” Along with Rutherford, captain James Cox has made a huge contribution to the varsity team. Cox dominates in his best event, the 100 butterfly. With his best time as 101.63 seconds, Cox is expected to place top 10 in the Macomb County meet. “Our record does not reflect the performance of our team. Everyone on the team has Belief Statements: Conflict is a natural part of everyday life. Conflict is an opportunity to grow and learn. Neither avoidance nor violence are healthy responses to conflict. Through awareness of cultural differences, we grow to respect others and cherish diversity. Adults provide powerful behavioral models for students; this is especially true when dealing with conflict. Students can learn to resolve many of their conflicts without adult intervention. Senior James Cox dropped a significant amount of time in every event,” said Cox. As this is Cox’s third and final year swimming, he is optimistic about swimming at Wayne State for next year. “If I keep dropping time like I currently am, I have high expectations to swim while I’m at college,” said Cox. Both Rutherford and Cox are pleased with the performance of the team, but they aren’t quite ready to leave. “We have had some phenomenal swims and great memories,” said Rutherford. “It’s sad to see it end.” CITY WIDE DRIVING SCHOOL Adults 18 & Over Private Lessons Teens 14 and 8 months - 18 Years 3 week classes and Year Round Instructions 586-415-9676: For 32887 Hayes Warren Location Mission Statement: The mission of the peer meditation program is to enable students to resolve conflicts peacefully, to promote mutual understanding of individuals and groups throughout the school, and to enhance the climate of the school by providing each person opportunities to learn that conflict is natural and that conflict offers opportunities when resolved through the problem-solving strategies of conflict resolution.
