There’s something about fall that feels different.
It’s more than the changing leaves, cooler temperatures, and shorter days. To me, fall feels like the beginning of a new six-month chapter. We slowly spend less time outside, settle into our homes a little more, move quickly through a calendar filled with holidays and celebrations, indulge in a little more comfort food, perhaps put on a few pounds, sleep a little longer, and, if we’re fortunate, spend more time gathered around tables with family and friends.
And then there’s the fashion.
As the temperature drops, our wardrobes somehow become more interesting. Fall allows to layer with options. Blazers. Sweaters. Turtlenecks. Boots. Jackets. Scarves. And, in my case, a fashionable hat, because keeping my bald head warm is both a necessity and an opportunity to accessorize.
Fall also means football season, and for much of the country, that’s a pretty big deal. As someone who played college football, there’s still something special about this time of year. The anticipation, the competition, the camaraderie and all of the traditions surrounding the game never really get old.
And these days, the game doesn’t even start when the players take the field.
NFL players have turned their arrival at the stadium into its own fashion runway. Pregame outfits have become almost as much a part of the conversation as the X’s and O’s. The tunnel walk has become a statement of individuality, personality and confidence.
September also brings Hispanic Heritage Month, which makes this issue especially meaningful to us at FLM. I’m incredibly excited to feature our cover story on Carmen Seminario, a talented Peruvian fashion designer who has established herself in Chicago while building a presence that extends far beyond our city.
Carmen’s story is about more than fashion.
It’s about dreaming something, pursuing it and achieving it. It’s about bringing culture, creativity and heritage into your work. And, perhaps most importantly, her story represents the beautiful makeup of the many cultures and backgrounds that continue to shape this country.
That diversity is one of our greatest strengths.
Throughout this issue, we’ve assembled fashion stories and features designed to help you navigate the season. Whether you’re dressing for the office, heading out for dinner, attending a football game, traveling somewhere new or simply enjoying a crisp fall day, there are plenty of ways to elevate your style.
Fashion is as much about attitude as it is about what you wear.
So whatever you decide to put on when you walk out that door this fall, wear it with confidence.
