One of the things I love most about fashion is how cyclical it is — what was once “old” somehow always finds its way back to being “new.” I’m reminded of this every day thanks to my 17-year-old son, who takes great pride in curating his OOTDs. Between his sneaker obsession (no surprise there) and his new love for thrifting, he’s discovering vintage fashion in his own way. Recently, he came home excited about a shirt he scored thrifting — only for me to pull out an old photo of myself wearing almost the exact same thing decades ago. Of course, being a teenager who “knows everything,” he needed me to explain that this is what fashion does: it reinvents itself. Bell bottoms of the ’70s came back in the 2000s. Skinny jeans took their cue from the ’80s. Double-breasted suits? I rocked them in the mid-90s, and now they’re back again.

But beyond trends and cycles, fashion is about mindset and expression. I’ve had to remind myself to let my son carve out his own style instead of imposing mine on him. Yes, I’ll still give my two cents when he needs to look polished or dress for the occasion, but it’s a joy to watch him experiment and define his own identity through clothes. Growing up, my sister and I were taught to always step out well-groomed, knowing that first impressions matter. I share the same lesson with my sons today — but I also remind them that fashion isn’t about judgment. It’s about individuality. It’s about respecting diversity. Just like food, fashion is richer and more exciting when it reflects different cultures, perspectives, and personalities

Fashion is more than fabric — it’s a visual reminder that we can (and should) be who we want to be. Don’t hate, appreciate. Stay confident in your wardrobe, embrace your unique style, and celebrate the differences that make us all stand out. I hope you enjoy our Fall Fashion Issue featuring the bold, one-of-a-kind Shernett Swaby of SWABY fashions — a designer who proves that individuality, craftsmanship, and confidence will never go out of style.
