Steve Carell is no stranger to drama (“Dan In Real Life”) although he’s most well-known for comedy, as he skillfully creates his newest role as a father attempting to help his teenage son recover from addiction. It’s one of his best and most deeply emotional roles yet. Timothee Chalamet stars as Nic, the young addict, who captures the raw, brutal reality of what addiction does to a person and the fallout within a family. It’s a harrowing tale based in truth punctuating the fact that this issue can affect anyone, no matter your background, ethnicity, or social status.

THE OLD MAN & THE GUN

Robert Redford is back in the proverbial acting saddle, riding off into the sunset as Forrest Tucker, a gun-toting gentleman bank robber. Rarely can you describe a crime thriller as sweetly charming, but thanks to Redford and Sissy Spacek, this film is exactly that. Tucker and The Over The Hill Gang, as they have been publicly and comically dubbed, continue to pull off heists, evading the police. Officer John Hunt (Casey Affleck) leads the somewhat light-hearted cat and mouse game. It’s an unusual script that will endear you to “the bad guy,” and remind you that we all need to do what we love.

CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?

Melissa McCarthy might be asking just that after her film “The Happytime Murders,” but audiences and critics are sure to forgive her with her portrayal of Lee Israel, a downtrodden, caustically funny author lacking in social skills and friends who forges literary letters for a living in this truth is stranger than fiction film. Filled with heart, it’s an oddly loving tale of friendship and compassion. Written by Nicole Holofcener and directed by Marielle Heller, the film tackles more than meets the eye in an exquisitely poignant way.
