The truth is, with all the progress we appear to have, we also still struggle with our old ideals. Until we open our eyes and minds to something we may not agree with or approve of, we will still be stuck in 1950s mentality; stuck in roles that are binding even when they no longer fit. As the world changes around us, perhaps we too should change with the times. Family is much more than Mom & Dad and 2+ kids. To create, cultivate and even distance oneself from “family” is a right and a gift. Looking past historical roles and stereotypes is essential as diversity in families continue to be the norm.
