As an adult, I find my husband and friends often enamored with the level of intimate, deep conversation I’m able to hold with both my mom and dad. Just imagine though if most of the conversations held with your siblings growing up had been with your parents instead. There’s a different bond and foundation there, no doubt.

There’s another important aspect of family for me aside from those whose blood runs through my veins, and it's come in the form of lifelong friends. From a young age I’ve approached friendships with a certain zeal for meaningful connection and unconditional love. It’s always been that way and always will.

Those I spend significant time with are chosen carefully. Once I’ve truly befriended someone, I am there for life. No matter the challenges or conflicts that may arise, no matter the differences in life paths or added distance between us as time passes, I am there through the good, bad and ugly, and I seek out those who I know will be equally invested. My closest friends are considered family, essentially my brothers and sisters, and I mean it in the truest sense of the word.

People with siblings might say ‘without siblings, you couldn’t possibly understand the bond,’ but I beg to differ. The bond I share with those in my inner circle is unbreakable. They’ve seen every side of me and I of them. The inside jokes and common understanding we share can’t be matched, and each relationship is as unique as the next.
