“Family is everything.” That’s a common phrase used a lot within my inner circle and as you can see from the above photos, it certainly rings true for me. However, through the years, I’ve found that “family” is not just limited to blood relatives, but extends far beyond the tradition of family. Although I don’t have any biological brothers, I’ve been blessed over the years to have met many friends that I now consider my brothers. During college I had football teammates and roommates that fit the bill and now my Chicago fellas check that box. Although I have one biological sister, I have two college female friends that I consider my sistas. My in-laws have felt like family from the first day we met and even though it’s business related, I consider our FLM contributors my family as well.
Often when we reminisce about the great times or moments in our lives those experiences involve people that we’re close to. Whether they’re our parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins or best friend, the lasting memories are something to be cherished. September’s “family” issue will take you back to those nostalgic days and nights of boating and sleepovers and touch on the new beginnings of reunions and BBQ’s. Since families are becoming more diverse, we will explore the multicultural aspect of family that is changing the world and how our relationships can be better when we ditch certain family. Keeping it all in the family, our resident film critic, fresh off the red carpet, delves into her favorite celebs and films at the annual Toronto Film Festival. FLM was invited to a few unique family-filled events and parties this summer, so be sure to check out where we landed on the scene.
The group Sister Sledge had a hit back in the 80’s called “We Are Family”, which at one point was the team song for my dad’s softball team. But the words and meaning of the song resonated with folks back then, which probably attributed to its success. I think that words and authentic stories hold a lot of truths. I hope that our stories in this issue will hold true for you. Thanks again for your support, as we are certainly all one big family.
