Beauty is more than skin deep!

Clearly, the media has a lot of influence over what young people want to look like. Kids see pictures of flawless models and think they should look that way too. But of course that’s not possible. The pictures we see in magazines are not real. Most of these people have been airbrushed to look flawless and makeup does wonders, but they really have the same imperfections as everyone else! And yes, even celebrities suffer from acne, one of the most common, uncontrollable problems, especially for teens. The American Association of Dermatology estimates that 85 percent of teens will have acne at some point. How unfair is it that just when our kids are hypersensitive about their appearance, acne shows up?

Unfortunately acne is one of the trickiest disorders to treat. But we don’t need to be airbrushed to survive it. With the proper knowledge, we can help our teens get through this.

Here are some important steps and my personal favorite recommendations for teens dealing with acne:

1. Clean-Wash your face! Keeping your face clean keeps oils and bacteria away. Try Murad Clarifying Cleanser, a maximum strength cleanser that combats acne and breakouts.

2. Moisturize- Keep the areas hydrated. Acne cleansers and treatments tend to dry out the skin. Try First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, a moisturizer for all skin types that provides intense hydration while repairing the skin.

3. Treat- Add a night time treatment. Try Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic hydrating gel to reduce oil & pore size and Peter Thomas Roth complexion correction pads to clear acne, blackheads and to tighten pores.

4. Protect- Use Sunscreen to protect from future damage. Try Peter Thomas Roth oily problem instant mineral powder, a blemish fighting, transparent sunscreen that sits on the skin.

5. Conceal - Cover up any last blemishes. Try Murad acne treatment concealer to fight blemishes while offering long lasting coverage.

6. Wipe - Keep cleansing wipes (Sephora clarifying wipes) in your backpack and gym bag. Wiping your cell phone with Clorox Wipes Daily kills bacteria that sits on your phone and is transferred to your face over & over again.

We have to teach our children self confidence at any age, regardless of weight, height and race; embrace what has been given to us, and not strive for the unattainable perfection of the media. The beauty of being human is that we are all different.
