For more than 30 years, I’ve made working out a consistent part of my life. Since college, I’ve typically made it to the gym three to five times a week. There’s no denying the physical benefits. When I’m in shape, I feel better, my clothes fit better, and, quite honestly, I look better. But one of the greatest benefits of exercise is something I didn’t fully appreciate until later in life: mental clarity.
I began to notice a difference when I paid closer attention to what I was putting into my body. Eating better, drinking less alcohol, and staying active seemed to improve my awareness, focus, and overall outlook. I felt sharper and more present, and that made a difference in how I approached my day.
As I get older, that mental clarity has become even more important. Let’s be honest: I still make it to the gym, but my workouts aren’t as vigorous as they were when I was 20. And these days, I don’t have two hours to spend working out every time I walk through the doors. Instead, I’ve learned to focus on the quality of my workouts rather than the quantity. It’s less about how long I’m there and more about making the time count.
Sleep is another essential piece of the puzzle. I’ve always been an early riser, which means getting enough rest can make or break my day. When I don’t get proper sleep, I feel it in my energy and concentration. Have you ever woken up after a truly great night of sleep and felt like you could take on the world? It doesn’t happen nearly as often as I’d like, but when it does, I’m reminded of just how important feeling well-rested can be.
Wellness can look different for everyone. It isn’t simply about exercise, nutrition, or how we look in the mirror. Mental health is just as important to me. Prolonged stress can take a toll on our well-being, and finding peace of mind is essential to functioning at our best.
In this month’s FLM Wellness Issue, we explore several dimensions of what it means to feel well, including the challenges that can shape our physical and emotional health.
Our cover story featuring Pat Tomasulo takes a closer look at caregiving, a role many of us may find ourselves navigating at some point in our lives. Pat’s story is a reminder of why sharing our experiences matters. By listening to others, we can gain perspective, find support, and discover that we aren’t alone in the challenges we face.
As we look around the world today, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. War, rising costs, and the hate directed toward certain groups of people can weigh heavily on our minds. While we may not be able to control everything happening around us, we can make choices that protect our well-being.
So, I encourage you to make yourself a priority. Move your body in ways that feel right for you. Check in with your mental health. And don’t underestimate the value of stepping back, taking a breath, and giving yourself permission to reset.
