What is Emotional Intelligence?
Psychologist Daniel Goleman, who helped popularize EQ. Here are his five main components:
Self-awareness is the ability to recognize and understand your own moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effects on others. It means being attuned to your internal state in the moment and regulating your emotional reactions positively. Instead of reacting, pause, think before speaking, and express your feelings without placing blame
Self-regulation is the ability to control or redirect disruptive impulses and moods. It’s about managing how your emotions are expressed, taking responsibility when you’re wrong, de-escalating fights instead of intensifying them, and apologizing genuinely while working to repair the relationship
Motivation is the passion to work toward goals with energy and persistence. It’s an intrinsic drive that goes beyond money or external rewards. In relationships, it shows up as a commitment to healthy communication because your bond matters deeply to you.
Empathy is the ability to understand the emotional makeup of others and respond with care. You sense others’ emotions, take their perspective, and avoid behaviors like jealousy, blame, or gaslighting. Empathy helps you recognize when your actions are damaging and motivates you to change, grow, and strengthen your relationship
Social skills involve communicating clearly, resolving conflict, and inspiring others. With strong social skills, you handle difficult emotions with maturity, talk openly and honestly, and avoid destructive behavior.
