Music has always been a cornerstone of our lives, shaping memories and emotions in ways that last a lifetime. I still remember the joy of playing with my cousins in my grandma’s basement, dancing to the Jackson 5’s “ABC,” which we played over and over on a 45” record until we finally flipped it over to hear the B-side.
If you were around during the era of 8-track tapes, you might remember the frustration of a tape skipping to another track right in the middle of your favorite song. For me, Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall was my go-to 8-track, and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” was that one song that always seemed to skip.
Then came cassette tapes, a game changer that let us record songs straight from the radio and play them in our cars or boom boxes. My college roommate had a stash of cassettes filled with love songs, perfect for setting a romantic mood. We’d often borrow one of his tapes when the moment called for it—they were practically gold!
Next, CDs made their debut, and now, we live in an age where any song is just a download or stream away. While I’ve watched music formats change drastically over the years, the one constant has been the power of music to move us. Music can lift you up or bring a tear to your eye; it can fill you with joy or send chills down your spine in a suspenseful movie. It has the power to teach, inspire, motivate, and heal. Music is culture, and music is life.
Though I have a soft spot for old-school hip hop—Biggie, Tupac, A Tribe Called Quest, Eric B & Rakim—I enjoy a range of artists across genres. Sharing music with my kids has been a great experience, and I’ve even been surprised to find many of the songs from my youth appearing on their playlists. They’ve also introduced me to new artists I might not have discovered otherwise, now staples in my streaming rotation on Pandora and Spotify. Here are some of the songs currently on my playlist. Let me know what you think!
“Telepatía” – Kali Uchis
“Candle Flame” – Jungle, Erick the Architect
