Rumble into Vulnerability

ately I’ve been reading a
lot of Brené Brown. I’ll
admit I’ve become a big
fan, and I highly recommend her work. In her books, she looks at the research on topics like leadership, shame, and vulnerability.
I used to think vulnerability was a weakness, and I think this belief reflects itself onto a lot of people in our culture. Logically it makes sense that we wouldn’t want to share too much of ourselves. On social media platforms we see people with carefully crafted images and brands. In popular media, we’re confronted with casts of superheroes and otherworldly impressive protagonists. In traditional workplaces, we’re not taught to be vulnerable, rather, we’re taught to try to make ourselves seem impressive.
