In this election year, tensions are high. Well, the reality is, in most election years tensions are high. So what does that mean for you and your relationship? Should you talk about your political opinions with someone you are dating? This can be difficult to navigate, but might be important. Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding how and if you should talk politics with your lover.
1. Relationship status. One thing to take into consideration is that it may depend on what you see for your relationship, long term. If you are just “having fun” and know you aren’t looking to build a life together, then you might as well steer clear of the subject. It doesn’t really matter what each of your political convictions are if you aren’t planning on sticking around with this person. If, however, you are interested in building something more lasting, it might be a good idea to navigate the topic and have a chat about your political opinions.
