Fete Lifestyle Magazine October 2016 Patriotism Issue | Page 5

What is patriotism? The topic is most popular on Veteran’s Day and the 4th of July, but lately it seems a question on many of our minds. Love and pride in country. How do we show it, how do we talk it and what do we do when our love and pride seem to falter. Can you love your country while at the same time criticize its ways? This month we talk about all that. I for one love my country, yet I don’t love all the things we do. But I’m the first one to defend my pride especially to those that just sit and complain. It’s kind of like growing up with a sibling. My mom always tells me the story of how her big sister, my aunt, used to torment her with teasing and bullying. But, her sister was always the first person to step in and protect her when someone else would pick on my mom. After all, that’s her little sister. Well I think patriotism is a lot like that. It’s my country and I love her. I may talk about her and criticize her, but I will stand up for her against someone else’s attacks. As with every month, our talented writers share their stories on the topic and even give some insights on how to navigate your own experience. And of course, there’s some fun light reading as an alternative to the national debate. Enjoy
