On my recent morning commute along Chicago’s DuSable Lakeshore Drive, I saw rows of tents set up alongside the drive. These weren’t city campers enjoying Chicago’s landscape. These were the homes of the houseless with nowhere to go.
If you live in a big city, you may have noticed a growing number of families waiting outside grocery stores, holding signs and asking for help. Many of these families are migrants who have fled their countries in search of a better life. Seeing them breaks my heart—it’s a reminder of how many people are struggling.
I often have conversations with my kids about the challenges of our community, country, and the world. While facing these realities, I also make it a point to help them recognize the blessings in their lives. When my oldest complains about school, I remind him of the countless kids in Chicago and around the world who would jump at the opportunity to take his place.
Traveling and exposing my boys to new people and experiences have always been a priority. Our travels have broadened their perspectives, teaching them about the diversity of others. They’ve met kids from other cities and countries, seeing firsthand how others live. These connections have been invaluable in helping them grow into compassionate, thoughtful individuals.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about health—both physical and mental. I have friends who are in a tough battle with their health, and I’m reminded daily not to take my own well-being for granted. Around the holidays, mental health challenges often exacerbate for many. While physical ailments can be more noticeable, struggles with mental health can be even more covert. I’m deeply grateful for my health, and I keep those loved ones in my thoughts and prayers, hoping for their strength and recovery.
Whatever challenges you may be facing, I hope there’s something you can hold on to with gratitude. Food, for many of us, is a source of comfort, connection, and joy. As you dive into our November issue filled with cozy, comforting recipes and stories, I want to thank our incredible contributors, talented photographers, and loyal readers who make FLM possible.
Wishing you all a warm and happy Thanksgiving. May it be a season of reflection, gratitude, and delicious food.
