It’s arguable that everyone’s favorite topic is food. Think about it, food is a part of every aspect of our daily lives. When someone gives birth, we celebrate with food. When someone passes away, we comfort with food. During sporting events, concerts, movies, and even awards shows, food is often the centerpiece for entertainment. Some people plan their vacations around the types of cuisine they want to indulge while traveling. Others take pride in seeking out new foods that they may not be able to experience in their hometown. However, food is more than nutrition and indulgence. Food brings people together in many ways that other things can’t. It is a conversation piece that sparks communication amongst strangers, or a peace offering that can mend broken hearts and relationships. Food can flip a frown upside down and tame the demeanor of an angry, grumpy old soul. A treat can ease the frustration of a toddler and reward the effort of a young athlete. Whatever the case, food unites us more than it divides us.
I recently lost my mother, but one of the memories that I will always hold on to is her delicious pumpkin squares that she used to make for the family around Thanksgiving. I will also remember her Christmas cookies that she sent to my sister and I every holiday season, even though we lived far away. The joy that those iced cut out cookies brought me was indescribable. Although the cookies were addictive (I kept my own stash hidden from my kids), the nostalgia I felt added to the deliciousness. Thus, food helps to stimulate great memories and replace sadness with appreciation.
