Bar Marta stays true to tradition. If a table buys a bottle of champagne, it is Bar Marta’s tradition to share a glass with the closest table. That’s why this neighborhood bar and eatery fits perfectly into Chicago’s Humboldt Park - a vibrant community known for its rich history, food and traditions.

Kori Coleman of the The Chicagolite, and I had the pleasure of dining at Bar Marta to cover their much raved about American fare and classic cocktails. The hot spot opened last November by Hogsalt Hospitality restaurant group veteran Austin Baker who’s other restaurants include Au Cheval, Bavette’s, Gilt Bar, Green Street Smoked Meats and The Doughnut Vault. This hidden gem sits on a corner and is easy to pass up due to the small printed “Bar Marta” white lettering on a black awning and its minimalistic design, which is a contrast to the bright colored murals the Humboldt Park area is known for. But curiosity draws you in, and as Kori and I entered the restaurant, we were automatically greeted by a dark but modern ambiance, buoyancy of seated diners and a touch of coziness.

The Burrata on top of couscous, snap peas, almonds, topped with radish was delicious. Kori and I finished every bite and were equally satisfied. When you’re in Chicago, Bar Marta is a must visit spot. To indulge in the full experience of the restaurant’s menu, I recommend ordering shared plates for groups of two or more.

Lemon, fresnos, and ginger accompanied our next dish, the Ora King Salmon Crudo. If you’re a diehard salmon lover like myself, this succulent dish is a must have. We also shared the Lamb Tartare, perfectly moist on top of lightly toasted bread and topped off with an egg over-easy. I highly recommend the Chicken Liver Toast. Which also happens to be one of owner Austin Baker’s favorite dishes. The smoothness of the chicken liver immersed with chillies, a honey drizzle and the crispy chicken skin on top was the perfect amount of flavor and texture exploding in your mouth. Order all three dishes next time you dine in and thank me later.

Bar Marta is known for their bar’s expansive list of whiskeys, cocktails, wine and everything in between. The Strange Brew which consisted of gin, pineapple, and IPA was Kori’s drink of choice. I chose the Lion’s Tail immersed with bourbon, alspice dram, and Angostura. I am guilty of having ordered a second Lion’s Tail. It was hard not to come back for seconds. Both drinks were perfect pairings to go along with the dishes we indulged in throughout the night.

Austin shared with Kori and I that Bar Marta means “Old Friend”. Next time you’re in the neighborhood, stop by your old friend, share some plates, pop a bottle of champagne, share it with a neighboring table and join the family. Cheers! Discover more at www.barmarta.com.
